Bridgestone

As the largest tyre company in the world, and one of the most prevalent, it is thought that almost a fifth of the world’s vehicles sport Bridgestone tyres. While they manufacture tyres for a wide range of vehicle types, they are particularly well-known for their specialist touring, sporting, and 4×4 driving tyres. Bridgestone are a premium brand of tyre, so expect to pay higher prices than average.

Falken

The focus for Falken tyres is on ultra high performance tyres for cars, and the company has also reliable lines in truck, bus and commercial vehicle tyres. The company is fairly young compared to other brands, having been established in 1983. However, this didn’t stop the brand demonstrating its technological prowess early on in motorsports, and has continued to win competitions to this day. Falken tyres have now become a strong choice for vehicle owners across the globe.

Michelin

As one of the most recognisable brands in the world, Michelin have long stood out as an international pioneer for tyre and rubber manufacture – with a committed research and development department furthering this improvement year by year. They boast a wide selection of tyres for a broad range of different vehicle types (including scooters and bicycles). They provide a huge variety of tyres, all serving different purposes and catering for different road conditions. Michelin are also renowned for high performance and durability.

Dunlop

This company certainly has impressive beginnings with the founder, John Boyd Dunlop, responsible for inventing the first pneumatic tyre. Since then, Dunlop have not ceased their innovative approach to tyre manufacture, and have a leaning towards improving comfort and convenience for everyday drivers. They are also one of the more affordable options on the market.

Continental

Continental are frequently chosen by major vehicle manufacturers, thanks to their strong focus on safety, handling and braking – this has also seen them rank highly on tyre tests. Thanks to advanced polymers, Continental tyres are designed to be durable and long-lasting, and are also quite competitively priced, offering impressive tread-life warranties, though their truck tyre options are fairly limited.

Pirelli

With a reputation for producing high quality, high-end tyres, Pirelli are the sole manufacturer for Formula 1 – a truly privileged position, and one that has cemented them as a leading tyre brand for sports and racing cars, along with premium, high-powered vehicles. However, you don’t need to have a supercar to benefit from a Pirelli tyre – they also manufacture products for everyday motorists, so you too can benefit from these high performance options.

Goodyear

If you’re seeking performance tyres for all weathers, Goodyear has one of the broadest selections of any tyre manufacturer to choose from, with an impressive choice of performance options per size. Though a little more pricey than other brands, Goodyear are still an affordable option for those seeking high-performance tyres with a decent tread-life warranty, which they offer for almost all of their products.

Hankook

This company is relatively young compared to other tyre brands, but their reputation for affordability and high performance has seen them become one of the most popular tyre brands globally, and their achievements have seen them factory fitted to a number of luxury car brands. However, their tread-life warranties may differ depending on the retail partner used.

Apollo

Established in the mid-seventies, Apollo is an Indian brand who deliver a diverse range of tyres to customers throughout the world. They put the customer first and pride themselves on offering a wide variety of choices to their customers, and manufacture commercial, industrial, farm, bike, and car tyres, amongst others. This is a company that claims to care for society and business ethics, making sure to address ethical, environmental and safety requirements.

Vredestein

With a strong focus on technology and performance, Vredestein are keen to enhance the driving experience for their customers, whether that be through innovation and design, or through safety improvements. They take great pride in their pioneering attitude, and over the years have made attempts to improve safety, handling and fuel economy of their products. Though established in the Netherlands in the early 1900s, Vredestein is now owned by Apollo.

A final note: what’s the weather like?

While choosing the right tyre brand is important, it’s also wise to consider the time of year. Summer and winter conditions may require different tyres suited to those particular conditions, so bear in mind you might need a set of winter tyres and summer tyres to maximise your car’s performance in varying conditions.
