How to Stay Safe on the Road in Winter

General News · Posted by: Mobile Tyres 2 U · 28th November 2019

Accidents increase by 20% amongst drivers during the winter months. This is due to a combination of icy roads, darker days and a lack of forethought. With just a few simple precautions, you can significantly decrease your chances of getting into an accident this winter.

Battery

Batteries work overtime in winter; their output is hampered by cold temperatures, and extra electricity will be required to power the car’s lights and heater. It may be worth getting your car battery evaluated and replaced/repaired if needed.

Coolant

Engine coolant is responsible for preventing the water in your engine from freezing. Many drivers top up their engine coolant with water when they see the mixture is low, but this creates a diluted mixture that may fail to work correctly. For best results, coolant should be 50% water and 50% antifreeze. Stay safe in winter by topping your coolant up to the correct ratio.

Windscreen wipers

Windscreen wipers work extra hard in winter as they thrash at stubborn ice on the windscreen. If your windscreen wipers are old, they could become damaged or snap off entirely. Consider replacing your windscreen wipers as the winter season approaches.

Winter Tyres

Switching to winter tyres during the colder months will help you to stay in control of your vehicle on icy roads. Winter tyres use a combination of unique features to improve grip ability. These include:

  • A soft rubber compound, usually made by including more natural rubber in the mix, which stays softer in lower temperatures.
  • A deeper tread depth. A minimum tread depth of 1.6mm is all that is legally required, but anything less than 3mm won’t provide a suitable grip. Deep tread grooves are more effective at displacing water and will prevent your vehicle from skidding uncontrollably.
  • Small jagged slits, known as ‘sipes’, on the surface of the tread blocks. These increase the surface area of the tyre to improve traction on the road.
  • A tread pattern that is designed to improve traction on the road. Tread patterns will vary between manufacturers.

Winter tyres are available from the world’s most popular tyre manufacturers. You can quickly identify a winter tyre by the snowflake symbol on its sidewall.
